The Girl Who Speaks Bear, the name itself sounded really really interesting to me. Having finished reading the book last night I can say that the author of this book, “Sophie Anderson” has written this book so well, that she might just be one my favourite author of all my life as a kid. The book felt more illustrated even without illustration with her wonderful use of language and words - plain and simple descriptions and beautifully told and totally relatable emotions of the characters. I absolutely loved how she describes bonds between Yanka and her friends and everyone who accompanied her.
The description of the northern Russian village on the edge of the Great snow forest with its sparkling snow and an adventurous journey of Yanka, the girl with bear legs is just so amazing. I really loved the setting of Yanka’s village. The smells of the forest in the autumn and spring and the lime tree, all of that felt magical and often while reading I felt I was really there in the same place.
The story follows the path of young girl set on discovery of her family’s past and her place of belonging. I loved the sense of having Yanka gradually learn of her belonging.
Anyone literally of any age can sit along and enjoy this amazing story.. featuring the snowy mountains and Yanka's adventures.
Overall it was a great read and I would definitely recommend this book. As for me.. I’ve just asked my Dad to order all the other books from Sophie Anderson.
